In 2012 Eircom held an interesting project in Dublin’s city centre entitled ‘Engage’. This project sought to breath new life into the companies phone boxes dotted around the city. Tank collective were commissioned to organise several artists and designers to create objects that would attract attention and ‘engage’ passers-by in various ways.
Designer Leo Scarff was commissioned to create a work for the St.Stephen’s Green location alongside the LUAS tram line. The ‘Prism’ product was developed as an amoebic form that would appear to grow out of the top of the double phone box. Colour changing LED lighting was installed inside and glowed through the night creating a dramatic feature on the roadside over the festival schedule.
Many thanks to Andrew Brady and Gearoid Carvill of abgc and the Tank collective, Dublin without whom the piece would not have been completed.
